This month, our community is exploring the IB Learner Profile trait of Thinker, which reminds us that students learn best when they use both critical and creative reasoning to make sense of complex challenges. At ASEDS, developing thinkers is at the heart of our International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy.
As Libby Vino, our IB Coordinator, shares in her weekly IB Chats series, one of the most important ways we nurture strong thinkers is by helping students embrace growth over perfection.
“When students understand that mistakes are not failures but information, they become more willing to take intellectual risks and persist through difficult tasks.” – Libby Vino, IB Coordinator
In today’s fast-paced and high-pressure world, children often feel the need to get everything “right” the first time. But true thinking does not happen in a straight line. It involves trial, error, reflection, and revision. When we normalize struggle and view challenges as opportunities, students learn to persevere, stay curious, and try again. These are the habits of mind that prepare students not just for school, but for life.
Across the IB continuum, students receive feedback that focuses on where they are in their learning and what they can work toward next.
- In the MYP, descriptive rubrics help students identify their strengths and set actionable goals. Instead of asking “How good am I?”, students naturally begin asking “What is my next step?”
- In the PYP, this aligns beautifully with our Responsive Classroom approach. Teachers offer specific and process-oriented feedback such as “You stayed focused on that task for a long time” or “You tried several different approaches” so children learn to recognize the strategies that lead to growth.
A Parent Tip for Nurturing Thinkers at Home
When your child hits a challenging moment, try asking:
- “What have you tried so far?”
- “What else might you do?”
This gentle guidance encourages independence, builds confidence, and helps children internalize that thinking is an active and flexible process.
