This fall, our stage came alive with mystery, humor, and bold performances during our Fall Drama production, Big Bad. Led by our talented performing arts team, Mr. Justin, our Performing Arts Teacher and director; Ms. G, assistant director and Grade 5 Teacher; and Ms. E, our Dance Teacher and choreographer, the production was a true celebration of student voice, creativity, and collaboration.
Big Bad invited the audience into a clever courtroom-style retelling of familiar fairy tales, all centered around one big question: Who is really guilty? As the stories unfolded, audience members were asked to listen closely, consider multiple perspectives, and ultimately vote on the verdict. This interactive element made every performance dynamic and engaging, encouraging viewers to think critically and reflect before deciding.
Throughout the process and on stage, our students brought the IB Learner Profile to life. They were risk-takers as they stepped into new roles, memorized lines, and performed confidently in front of a live audience. They were communicators, using voice, movement, and expression to tell a compelling story. They demonstrated collaboration and caring, supporting one another behind the scenes and on stage, and they showed reflection and open-mindedness as they explored different viewpoints within the story. We also had some talented students in Middle School and Grades 4 and 5 helping with managing the set and props as well as sound, contributing their skills to make the production run smoothly.
Mr. Justin shared the following reflection on the production: “This was truly a student-driven production. I’ve received an overwhelming amount of feedback from ASEDS faculty, families, and friends, about how engaging and seamless the production felt to watch. Many people shared that they were able to follow and enjoy the storytelling so clearly because of how well-rehearsed the cast was and how deeply they understood their characters’ motivations and roles within the plot. All of their hard work absolutely showed and allowed everyone to shine.”
Most of all, we are incredibly proud of our students for giving it their all. From rehearsals to curtain call, they embraced the challenge, took creative risks, and shined as performers and teammates. Their hard work and dedication were evident in every scene.
Thank you to our faculty team for guiding our students with passion and expertise, and to our families and community members who joined us to be part of the fun and the final vote.
We cannot wait to welcome everyone back in the spring for our next production, Beauty and the Beast: The Musical. Stay tuned for more magic on stage.
