Empowering Student Voice Through Art

April 17, 2026

Last evening, the All Saints Episcopal Day School community gathered to celebrate the 13th Annual Hat Show, an inspiring showcase of student creativity, confidence, and artistic growth.

From the moment guests entered the gallery spaces, it was clear this was more than an art show. It was a celebration of process, voice, and the power of creative expression.

Throughout the year, students in our art and design programs explore a wide range of mediums, including oil pastels, ceramics on the potter’s wheel, weaving, sewing, and mixed media construction. Rooted in the International Baccalaureate framework, their work is driven by inquiry, choice, and reflection. Students make decisions about their projects, materials, and direction, taking ownership of their learning as they document their thinking, revise their ideas, and grow through each stage of the artistic process.

This dedication was on full display during the gallery walk, where students proudly served as docents and guided families and guests through two exhibition spaces. Public speaking is an essential part of this experience. Students articulated their ideas, explained their process, and engaged in meaningful conversations with visitors. Each piece told a story, not only through the artwork itself, but through thoughtful artist statements that shared students’ inspirations, challenges, and creative decisions.

Learning extends far beyond our art studio walls. Through research, field trips, and guest speakers, students deepen their understanding of what it means to be an artist in the world. Our middle school students, including members of the National Junior Art Honor Society, continue to expand their impact by sharing their work in the community and engaging with local leaders during events such as Art Month.

The evening concluded with the highly anticipated runway show, where students brought their artistic visions to life through wearable art. Each grade level explored a unique artistic movement or concept, from Impressionism and Surrealism to Art Nouveau and Contemporary Art, transforming ideas into bold and imaginative designs. As students stepped onto the runway, they demonstrated not only creativity and confidence, but also strong communication skills as they presented their work to a live audience.

One of the most powerful aspects of the evening was the courage on display. Students stepped outside their comfort zones, both in the creation of their work and in sharing it publicly. In doing so, they embodied the IB Learner Profile as communicators, risk-takers, and reflective thinkers, embracing what it truly means to be an artist.
