Imagine a Sixth Grader on a zip line, heart racing, surrounded by classmates cheering them on. This isn’t just an adrenaline rush—it’s education in motion. This fall, our Sixth Grade students are experiencing this firsthand at Green Chimneys Clearpool Outdoor Campus, engaging in team-building activities like zip lining and rock climbing. These overnight trips are more than just a break from the classroom; they are essential extensions of academic learning, character building, and social development.
At All Saints, we believe that taking students out of the classroom and into the real world isn’t just an added bonus—it’s integral to their growth. We design these experiences so that every year, from Pre-K3 to Grade 8, students can engage with the world in meaningful ways, enhancing both their academic learning and personal development.
Early Learning Adventures
- Pre-K4: Visits the Post Office, connecting their local experience to an in-class project for National Postcard Week.
- Kindergarten: Explores health and farming at Health Barn, preparing for their own Milestone Project – Farm Day.
- First Grade: Observes seasonal changes on nature walks through Flat Rock Brook, linking their science curriculum to the outdoors.
- Second Grade: Walks the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, applying their study of Manhattan’s geography and experiencing real-world engineering marvels.
Deeper Experiences in Middle School
By middle school, the trips become more significant. For example, Fifth Graders take a three-day trip to Frost Valley Farm to explore the human-animal bond, a topic revisited in Grade 7. In Grade 6, students participate in outdoor activities like rock climbing, challenging them to become risk-takers and effective communicators, fostering key Learner Profile Traits that will serve them throughout their lives.
Seventh Graders visit Boston, exploring the city’s rich history by walking the Freedom Trail and visiting the Boston Science Museum. They also get a glimpse of future academic opportunities with a tour of Harvard. This trip enhances their understanding of history, science, and culture in ways that textbooks cannot replicate.
Eighth Graders conclude their time at All Saints with a transformative 10-day trip to Scotland, exploring climate change mitigation efforts and engaging directly with global leaders in sustainability. This trip not only celebrates the end of middle school but also prepares students for the global challenges they will encounter in high school and beyond.
An Integral Part of the Curriculum
These trips are not isolated events but are integrated into our curriculum, reinforcing classroom lessons while expanding students’ horizons beyond the school walls. Such experiences foster deeper connections with peers and teachers, building bonds that last well beyond graduation.
We invite parents to be part of these experiences, whether as chaperones or by staying engaged with updates from their teachers. Our Friday Notes often include details about upcoming trips and suggestions for family activities that can further extend the learning at home.
School trips are not just excursions—they are key to shaping well-rounded students who are prepared to navigate the world with confidence, empathy, and curiosity. Whether it’s walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or zip lining through a forest, these experiences provide the context and challenge students need to become lifelong learners.Interested in what an All Saints’ education can do for your child?
