Inspired to Inspire: The Teachers Behind Our Teachers (2)

March 27, 2025

This article is the second in a series.

Great teachers don’t just educate—they inspire, support, and ignite a lifelong love of learning. At All Saints, our educators bring passion and creativity into the classroom, often shaped by the mentors who once guided them. The impact of a remarkable teacher can extend across generations, as lessons once received are passed down to new students in fresh and meaningful ways.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce you to these influential figures in a special series. We continue with Alex Schmidt, our Academic Enrichment Teacher and Coordinator, whose work reaches into nearly every classroom, touching almost every student’s educational journey. Through her calm skill and intentional support, she helps students recognize their own potential, fostering a culture of growth that strengthens our entire community. Alex credits her calm, caring nature to her fourth-grade teacher, who showed her the same unwavering support—an influence that continues to shape her work with students today.

Mrs. Camlet’s Lasting Influence
by Alex Schmidt

In Mrs. Camlet’s class, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time was a cherished daily ritual. While we were expected to read independently, she always had a book in hand as well. Her expectations were clear, and even those who weren’t naturally drawn to reading came to look forward to this time. She had a gift for matching us with books at just the right level, nudging us toward new genres, and patiently explaining unfamiliar words—like cow pie—which left us giggling but wiser.

Projects were another highlight, especially when we built longhouses. I still remember the thrill of using a hot glue gun for the first time, feeling both trusted and capable. That sense of empowerment was a hallmark of her teaching.

What stood out most about Mrs. Camlet was her patience, calm demeanor, and deep understanding of children. She set high expectations but used encouragement and positive reinforcement to keep us motivated. Even when we struggled, her classroom was a safe space to learn and grow. I don’t recall her ever raising her voice; instead, she led by example. From her, I learned an invaluable lesson: showing respect earns respect.

Today, as an educator working with students from Kindergarten through eighth grade across all subjects, I see Mrs. Camlet’s influence in everything I do. Whether I’m assisting in a Kindergarten classroom, pushing into a middle school math lesson, or helping a fourth grader organize their workload, I strive to create that same supportive, encouraging environment. Like Mrs. Camlet, I believe that setting high expectations while offering kindness fosters both confidence and resilience in students.

Even as an adult, I occasionally ran into Mrs. Camlet, and she was always Mrs. Camlet—never Lois. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in my work every day. For that, I am endlessly grateful.
