Fourth Graders Take on Natural Disasters with Creativity and Innovation

March 12, 2025

At All Saints, learning is more than memorizing facts—it’s about curiosity, problem-solving, and real-world application. Our fourth graders recently put these skills to the test with an exciting science project tackling one of Earth’s biggest challenges: natural hazards.

As part of their “How the World Works” unit, students explored the science behind volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. But they didn’t stop at just understanding these powerful forces—they asked a bigger question: How can we reduce their impact?

Using the IB design cycle, students researched real-world solutions, analyzed challenges, and then designed their own innovative prototypes. Some created earthquake-resistant buildings, while others engineered flood barriers or tsunami warning systems. Each project showcased creativity, critical thinking, and thoughtful planning.

But what’s an invention without a strong pitch? To bring their ideas to life, students developed persuasive presentations and used green screen technology to film professional-style videos showcasing their models. Along the way, they built essential skills in communication, technology, and public speaking—skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

This project is a perfect example of what makes an IB education at All Saints so special:
Inquiry-based learning: Students researched and experimented to find solutions to real-world problems.
Creative problem-solving: They didn’t just learn about natural hazards—they worked to solve them.
Confidence & communication: Through video presentations, students practiced speaking clearly and persuasively.
Hands-on discovery: Learning became an immersive experience, connecting science, technology, and design.

At All Saints, we believe that young minds can make a difference. By fostering curiosity, resilience, and innovation, we empower students to see themselves as problem-solvers in an ever-changing world.
