Celebrating Cultural Diversity: Lunar New Year, Black History Month, and the IB Mission

February 6, 2025

At All Saints, we believe that learning extends far beyond textbooks—it’s about understanding the world, embracing different perspectives, and fostering a deep sense of global citizenship. This philosophy comes to life through our celebration of cultural traditions, such as Lunar New Year and Black History Month, which offer students meaningful opportunities to explore history, identity, and the interconnectedness of cultures.

Last week, the spirit of Lunar New Year filled our hallways as students created symbolic lanterns, wrote poetry about renewal and spring, and explored the rich traditions of this global celebration. These hands-on experiences not only helped students appreciate the significance of the holiday but also encouraged them to reflect on their own identities and the diverse backgrounds of their peers. As we move into February, we continue this celebration of cultural awareness by honoring Black History Month—a time to recognize the struggles, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black leaders, artists, scientists, and changemakers.

While Lunar New Year and Black History Month shine a spotlight on different cultures, our commitment to inclusivity and diverse perspectives is embedded in everything we do. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, we cultivate curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking by integrating a wide range of voices into our curriculum year-round. Whether our first graders are learning about Ruby Bridges’ courageous stand for education or our sixth graders are discovering the groundbreaking work of the mathematicians from Hidden Figures, our students are constantly making connections between history, society, and their own learning. These discussions align with the IB global context of fairness and development, helping students engage thoughtfully with issues of justice, equity, and progress.

By exploring the resilience, innovation, and contributions of Black individuals, we reinforce the IB mission of developing globally minded citizens who respect and value different perspectives. Through inquiry-driven learning, students analyze historical and social contexts, deepening their understanding and making interdisciplinary connections that shape their worldview.

At All Saints, we strive to nurture caring, knowledgeable, and principled learners who seek intercultural awareness and embrace their role in creating a more just and peaceful world. Black History Month is an important reminder of these values, ensuring that students recognize the importance of inclusion and respect—not just in February, but every day.
