A Day in the Life of a Second Grader at All Saints:

April 30, 2025

Step into a Second Grade classroom at All Saints and you’ll immediately feel it—the warmth, the energy, and the purposeful buzz of learning in action. From the moment students walk through the door, they’re greeted not just with a smile, but with genuine connection. Teachers remember birthdays, cheer on extracurricular successes, and ask thoughtful questions that make students feel seen and valued. It’s this strong sense of community that sets the tone for the day—and for everything that follows.

Routines That Build Confidence and Independence

Morning routines are structured but dynamic. Students know exactly what to expect each day: a message and “do-now” activity posted on the Promethean Board, followed by a light-hearted Question of the Day that blends fun with tech literacy—think: Would you rather have super strength, flight, or invisibility?

Once they’ve responded via Google Forms or Padlet on their iPads, students rotate through engaging morning work that includes grammar, reading, math, and keyboarding practice. While they work, the room hums with friendly greetings and quiet check-ins. It’s more than routine—it’s relationship-building and academic focus, working hand in hand.

Learning That’s Active, Varied, and Student-Centered

At All Saints, students aren’t passive recipients of information. They’re active participants in their own learning. Lessons are designed to engage all learning styles, using a mix of storytelling, interactive Promethean Board activities, Google Slide presentations, Edpuzzles, videos, and hands-on projects.

Whether it’s a math concept, a grammar rule, or a social studies topic, content is delivered through multiple modalities, helping students truly internalize what they learn and connect it across subjects. This kind of teaching doesn’t just build understanding—it builds enthusiasm.

Choice, Challenge, and Collaboration

One of the hallmarks of Second Grade at All Saints is how students are supported and stretched. Early finishers aren’t left waiting—they’re offered a menu of meaningful options:

  • Weekly Boggle and Noggle (spelling and math) competitions
  • Collaborative puzzles that strengthen visual-spatial reasoning
  • Quiet reading, journal writing, or enrichment packets
  • Learning games that reinforce classroom content in fun ways

This allows students to explore their interests, reinforce key skills, and work at a pace that’s right for them—all while continuing to grow.

Learning Beyond the Test

Assessment at All Saints goes beyond paper and pencil. Students showcase their understanding through group projects, digital presentations, posters, videos, and even student-created games. These opportunities give students not only a chance to demonstrate what they’ve learned, but also to practice essential life skills—collaboration, communication, and creative problem-solving.

A Place Where Students Shine

What makes Second Grade at All Saints so special isn’t just the content—it’s the way students are engaged in it. They’re not just learning facts; they’re making connections, thinking critically, and growing into confident, curious learners.

Visitors often remark on how articulate, independent, and thoughtful our students are—and it’s no accident. The environment, the approach, and the community all work together to support a well-rounded, joyful, and impactful learning experience.

At All Saints, school isn’t something students “get through.” It’s a place where they thrive.
